Taught by Ira Weiss, Ph.D.Haredi is the Hebrew word for what we sometimes call “ultra-orthodox. In this series, we will look at the life of a Haredi family living in Jerusalem’s Geula neighborhood. Each class will begin with a short introduction to an aspect of Haredi society, followed by watching and discussing an episode from Season 1 of the Israeli smash hit TV series “Shtisel.” The series offers us a very accurate portrayal of Haredi home, work, school, and street life – and what got viewers in Israel glued to their televisions on Saturday nights were the series’ poignantly written, excellently acted and resonant storylines about life, love and loss … something we all can relate to.
Ira is a neurophysiologist by profession now retired after 30+ years at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. He grew up on the lower east side of New York City where he attended an Orthodox yeshiva. He helped found and run an NGO called Projects Encounter which, for four years, brought Palestinian and Israeli high school students to Spain for summer coexistence workshops and now serves on the board of New Story Leadership which brings Palestinian and Israeli young potential leaders to Washington for joint summer internships and leadership training.
