Live & Learn with Claudia Hercman Tues., Nov. 1 (10:30 am) on Zoom
November 1, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
History of the Argentine Jewish Community, Part I
Did you know that the Argentinian Jewish community is the 6th largest in the world? The first Jewish communities in Latin America were Sephardic. What happened to those Jews during the Inquisition? Why, if Latin America was part of the Spanish empire, is the Jewish Community in Argentina 80% Ashkenazi and only 20% Sephardic today? Who were the Jewish Gauchos? What are some of the most important Jewish sites in Buenos Aires? Join us to find out!
About Claudia Hercman: Claudia, an Argentinian tour guide and translator (and sculptor & painter!), was born and raised in Buenos Aires into the Argentinian Jewish community. She’s been conducting city, art and Jewish tours for the last 20 years, most recently figuring out how to offer virtual Jewish tours to people all over the world during the pandemic. She loves talking to people, meeting new friends and helping them explore the history of Jews in Argentina and we’re delighted to “welcome” her to our homes in Maryland.
