Neighbors in Need

TBA’s Tikkun Olam Committee supports a wide range of nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our neighbors with a wide range of needs. Please click below to learn more about how you can help. Each tab contains detailed information, including a link to TBA’s project coordinator(s). Contact the coordinators for more information or to volunteer to help.

  • A Wider Circle

    Who: Adults, families
    Where: Silver Spring, MD
    When: Throughout the year

    TBA Contact: Betty Shevitz

A Wider Circle touches the lives of some of the neediest in the DC area in its efforts to address poverty. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks at A Wider Circle. A Wider Circle also welcomes donations of furniture and household goods in good condition, as well as business clothes and accessories for those applying for jobs.

  • Homes Not Borders

Who: Adults/families/declutterers and downsizers looking for a quick solution
Where: At your home or at the Temple
When: Year-round and during designated collections at the Temple

    TBA Contact: Michele Koenick

Homes Not Borders helps furnish the homes of newly arrived refugee families and collects gently used furniture, dishes, and other household items year-round. We also hold collections for this organization occasionally at the Temple. Extra “muscle power” sometimes needed to help move items from congregants’ homes.

  • Community Reach of Montgomery County

    Who: Adults, families, teens
Where: Rockville, MD or at your home
    When: Throughout the year

    TBA Contact: Debbie Jacobs

Community Reach of Montgomery County helps the most vulnerable Montgomery County residents with health care, housing, financial emergency assistance, education for immigrants, and eldercare. Serve on a committee, help those seeking assistance through the Rockville Emergency Assistance Program, interpret (primarily Spanish to English), assist Rockville senior residents with tasks or technology. Many other opportunities, both one-time or ongoing.

  • Supporting Children Entering Foster Care

    Who: Adults, teens, families
Where: At the Temple, at your home, or elsewhere
    When: Throughout the year

TBA Contacts: Judi Goozh or Robin Temin

Hundreds of infants, children, and teens are placed into foster care on an emergency basis each year in Montgomery County. Most leave home or school in a hurry and cannot take anything with them. The children may also have to wait in a Child Protective Services social worker’s office before being placed into emergency foster care. The Tikkun Olam Committee and WTBA hold programs throughout the year to collect items needed by these children. Please watch for Temple announcements of the need for volunteers and donations.

  • Rebuilding Together Montgomery County

Who: Adults, teens ages 14 and older
    Where: Montgomery County, MD
    When: 2021: September 12 and 19:
2022 and after: Last two Sundays in April and first Sunday in May

    TBA Contact: Roger Rothman

Help provide free repairs to the home of a low-income family in Montgomery County by working alongside other TBA members. Both skilled and unskilled volunteers needed. No prior experience required. All materials provided.

  • Jewish Foundation for Group Homes (JFGH)

    Who: Adults, teens, families
    Where: At TBA
    When: Throughout the year

    TBA Contact: Charlotte Zuckman

Join fellow volunteers in working one-on-one with a group of JFGH women residents from multiple group homes for an occasional afternoon of crafts and fun at the Temple. Help residents with a craft project, play bingo, and enjoy a snack on a Sunday afternoon. Volunteers also are needed to plan and lead these projects. TBA also hosts JFGH residents at Spirit of Shabbat Services periodically at the Temple, and volunteers are needed to greet the JFGH women residents who come and accompany them at the services and Oneg.
