Health and Nutrition

TBA’s Tikkun Olam Committee provides a wide range of support for individuals and families who lack food security in our community or who would otherwise benefit from food-related service projects. Please click below to learn more about how you can help. Each tab contains detailed information, including a link to TBA’s project coordinator(s). Contact the coordinators for more information or to volunteer to help.

Meals for People
Experiencing Homelessness

  • Interfaith Works Women’s Shelter

    Who: Adults, families, teens, groups
    Where: Rockville, MD
When: Throughout the year on selected dates

    TBA Contact: Elizabeth Joseloff

Volunteers are needed periodically during the year to provide breakfasts, lunches, and to prepare and serve dinner at the Interfaith Works Women’s Center, a shelter in Rockville. The Temple provides all of the meals at this shelter during a week in the summer as well as at other times when the need arises.

  • Community Reach of Montgomery County
    Housing Program

    Who: Adults, families, teens, groups
    Where: Rockville, MD
When: Twice a month on Sundays

    TBA Contact: Amy Weinberg

TBA provides dinner twice a month for Community Reach’s Rockland and Jefferson Houses. Volunteers prepare a complete meal in advance for six residents and drop the meal off at the Rockland or Jefferson House between 5 and 6 p.m. on their chosen Sunday.

Other Nutrition-Related Needs

  • Meals on Wheels

    Who: Adults
Where: Rockville, MD, and near the Temple
    When: Monthly (year-round, backup available)

    TBA Contact: Joanne Brodsky

Deliver kosher meals to homebound individuals in our area. Volunteers pick up meals at the Hebrew Home in Rockville on their assigned morning (one day per month) and deliver them to JSSA clients by noon. Training provided. Substitute deliverers also needed.

  • Nourish Now

    Who: Adults, families, groups
    Where: Rockville, MD
    When: Throughout the year

    TBA Contact: Arlynn Joffe

TBA volunteers sort/pack food for distribution to local needy families on the 3rd Monday of the month, 10 a.m.–noon, at Nourish Now. Nourish Now also needs volunteers daily to package meals/healthy snack packs, as well as to run canned food drives and raise awareness. TBA members also support Nourish Now’s Thanksgiving Food Drive.

If you have fresh food left over from an event that you’d like to donate, call Nourish Now at 301-330-0222 (Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–5 p.m.) or 240-750-0747 (nights/weekends) to coordinate the donation.

  • Passover and Rosh Hashanah Baskets Delivery

    Who: Adults, families
    Where: Near the Temple
When: Typically the Sunday morning before Passover and Rosh Hashanah

TBA Contacts: Tina Levine  or Monya Cohen

Deliver bags of Passover and/or Rosh Hashanah necessities and treats to Russian immigrants, Holocaust survivors, and other needy individuals and families in our community. Volunteers can help on one or both holidays.

  • Thanksgiving Dinner at the Children’s Inn at NIH

Who: Adults, families (must be age 18 or older to serve dinner at the Inn)
Where: Children’s Inn, NIH, Bethesda, MD
When: A few days before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Day if serving

    TBA Contact: Gail Kaplan-Wassell

This project helps make Thanksgiving a little more home-like for families who must stay at NIH’s Children’s Inn with a sick child during the holiday. Volunteers are needed to cook ahead of time, serve (ages 18+), and/or donate toward the dinner.
