More About S’lichot

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi used to say: “the footsteps of man are directed by God,” suggesting that there is meaning to be found in every moment, regardless of where life’s journey takes us. Slichot, the prayers of forgiveness and return as we prepare for the High Holy Days, remind us that our individual paths – whether we perceive them as random, chosen, or even forced – can lead us toward growth and connection. To sit and pray together in reflection is itself a mitzvah, giving us a chance to realign with our better selves, repair relationships, forgive ourselves and others, and start fresh. For some, this is about God’s guiding hand; for others, it’s about recognizing that every step we take can be used for good. Slichot grounds us in the idea that our journeys, with all their twists and turns, are opportunities to reflect on our blessings, to act with kindness, and to step into the new year with intention inspired by the strength of our community.
