Review of 2022 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents with the ADL

Join TBA as we host leaders from the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) to review the results of the 2022 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents. Michelle Magner, Deputy Director and Rachel Lang, Associate Regional Director of the ADL DC office will participate in a discussion with Rabbi Gary Pokras regarding the rise in antisemitism across the country and locally. ADL will also be sharing what they are doing to combat hate and antisemitism.

2022 was the worst year for antisemitic incidents since ADL began recording more than four decades ago. There was a total of 3,697 incidents reported across the United States in 2022 – an increase of 36 percent compared to 2021, which was also a record setting year. In fact, this is the third time in the past five years that the year-end total has been the highest number ever recorded. Within the overall numbers, antisemitic assaults increased dramatically in 2022, increasing to 110 incidents from 88, or over 26 percent since 2021. White supremacist groups were responsible for a record number of antisemitic propaganda, accounting for 852 incidents in 2022, more than double the 422 incidents in 2021.

The local numbers are equally alarming.

  1. In Maryland, 109 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2022, a 98 percent increase from the 55 incidents in 2021, and a 132 percent increase from the 47 incidents reported in 2020. Maryland registered with the 10th highest number of antisemitic incidents reported in the country for 2022.
  2. In Virginia, 69 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2022, a 50 percent increase from the 46 incidents in 2021, and a 41 percent increase from the 49 incidents in 2020. Virginia registered with the 13th highest number of antisemitic incidents reported in the country for 2022.
  3. In Washington, D.C., 37 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2022, a 30 percent decrease from the 53 incidents in 2021, and a 11 percent decrease from the 43 incidents in 2020. D.C. registered with the 24th highest number of antisemitic incidents reported in the country for 2022.

Rachel Lang is the Associate Regional Director of the ADL DC office. She has spent her career working in educational non-profits and synagogues. Before coming to ADL, Rachel worked in synagogues across the country for ten years in various roles, programming and implementing formal and informal education programs, holiday celebrations, and facilitating community engagement. In her role at ADL, Rachel focuses on community engagement and outreach which includes building partnerships with Jewish and non-Jewish communal partners. She also helps to manage the regional operations team, which focuses on community outreach, engagement, advocacy, communications, and incident response.

Michelle Magner is the Deputy Regional Director for the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Washington, D.C. Regional Office. In her role, Michelle oversees educational programming and community engagement for the DC region. Working closely with the education team and regional ops, Michelle helps support addressing issues of bias and hate in schools and communities. Michelle has a background in education earning her Bachelors in Education from the University of Dayton and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Ashland University.  Prior to joining ADL, Michelle worked for a total of 8 years in both traditional public schools in Charles County, Maryland and a charter school in Columbus, OH as both a classroom teacher and high school administrator.
