JBC Author Pamela Nadell Discussing Antisemitism, an American Tradition
13 Mar @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
We are honored to welcome acclaimed historian and author Pamela S. Nadell as our guest speaker for Shabbat. She will speak about her important and timely book, Antisemitism: An American Tradition, a National Jewish Book Award Shortlist selection.
In this powerful work, Nadell traces the long and troubling history of antisemitism in the United States — from early restrictions that barred Jews from public office to university quotas, government decrees such as General Grant’s Order No. 11, the lynching of Leo Frank, Nazi rallies at Madison Square Garden, the Crown Heights riots, and the tragic shooting in Poway. While America has offered Jews extraordinary opportunity and refuge, it has also been shaped by recurring waves of exclusion, violence, and hatred.
Written in the wake of October 7 and the surge of antisemitism that followed, this book serves as both chronicle and warning. Nadell challenges us to confront the reality that antisemitism is not foreign to American life, but deeply woven into its history.
This program is presented in partnership with the Jewish Book Council. We encourage you to support JBC’s vital work in bringing Jewish authors and ideas to communities across the country.
